Recently, a presentation of Ivan Chendei’s collection of short fiction A Bird in Its Nest (Komora Publishing House, 2024) took place in Uzhhorod. As part of the project “Book Talks with Nadia Vovk” (“Tree of My Life” Charitable Foundation), a community of book lovers and connoisseurs of the work of the famous Zakarpattian writer, Shevchenko Prize winner, and author of the screenplay for the film Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors gathered at the artist’s family estate. There were also those who were discovering for the first time Chendei’s diverse prose, which has not been reprinted since the early 2000s.
The writer’s daughter Maria Chendei-Treshchak told the guests of the estate about the nest where her father was born, about the land where Ivan Chendei grew up, about his native Dubove and his inspirational Yasenova Mountain. Literary scholar and writer Roksolana Zharkova analyzed some of the symbols and metaphors of Chendei’s novels, emphasizing the depth and timelessness of the issues raised by the author in his works. Ivan Treshchak, the founder of the Ivan Chendey International Charitable Foundation, told the audience about the stages of preparation for the publication of this collection, which consists of fourteen selected novels and short stories by the classic of Ukrainian literature, and shared his thoughts on the importance of this publication today. The meeting-presentation was moderated by Nadiia Vovk.
By the way, the VI All-Ukrainian Ivan Chendei Short Fiction Contest is still open until April 20. The contest is held in two nominations: short fiction (unpublished prose works of no more than 20 thousand characters with spaces) and Chendei studies (scripts based on Ivan Chendei’s works or about his life and work; research papers, articles, reviews that have not been published before or have been published within the last three years).
